Parts Work &
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
The bread and butter of Present Beings, parts work is a non-pathologizing talk therapy method that
facilitates the exploration of inner complexity.
Originally credited to experiential family therapist Virginia Satir (1983), parts work has become more popularized through the method of Internal Family Systems (Schwartz 1994). My style pulls on the work of both of these giants of the field, with the goal of helping you (and your loved ones) understand yourselves and each other in new ways.
Throughout our sessions, I support each client and family to develop their connection with this core Self through what IFS calls Self energy — the foundation that holds themselves, their families, and their wounded or burdened parts.
From there, we’ll work together to explore and map the different parts of you that are responding to a certain situation.
Clients commonly identify parts such as …
Protector/manager parts
Inner child parts,
and Exiled parts each of whom carries a unique burden, and often outdated job description.
Each of these parts carries a unique burden, and often an outdated job description. In therapy, we’ll work to recognize, release, and reorganize the instincts that are creating the overwhelm for your parts, your inner system, and your relationship.
When we learn how to nurture these parts with Self energy, clients gain access to creative possibilities which allow new interaction patterns for your internal system and within your families.
